In March 2020, Congress established a Provider Relief fund as a part of the Coronavirus, Aid, Economic Relief and Security (CARES) Act to help healthcare providers and first line workers mitigate the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Department of Health and Human Services has been tasked with oversight of the $178 million budget which aims at assisting healthcare providers in reimbursing them for expenses and lost revenue attributable to the coronavirus pandemic. The legislation was also created to help ensure that uninsured Americans would be able to receive treatment for COVID-19-related illnesses.
