In a matter of months, the pandemic has changed the investment landscape in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few months ago. Both public and private markets face significant uncertainty, and although private equity (PE) firms may have potential buying opportunities, they face greater challenges in valuing their portfolio companies.
While several industries suffered immediate job losses and shutdowns, other areas have thrived. In March 2020, the world stock markets were down more than 30% from their February highs but through mid-August, the markets had rebounded significantly, with the S&P 500 remaining essentially flat while the NASDAQ advanced nearly 20%.
