In 2017, 477 health data breaches were publicly reported, according to the health care cybersecurity vendor, Protenus, which tracks breaches reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These breaches affected some 5.6 million patients. As hackers continue to develop in sophistication and reach, health care providers are being forced to navigate the costly consequences of these cybercriminals’ crimes.
